Way to Glow: Dual Exfoliation Peel

Way to Glow: Dual Exfoliation Peel

The Tulasāra™ Professional Service: Where Art Meets Science

There’s no better feeling than being relaxed and pampered at a spa. And while Aveda spas have always been bastions of calm, providing soothing treatments that helped guests unwind and escape the negative effects of stress, times have changed. That floating-on-air feeling is no longer an acceptable end result. Today’s spa visitor wants to see and feel real transformation, too.

To the rescue: Aveda’s breakthrough Dual Exfoliation Peel, a plant-powered alternative to microdermabrasion and glycolic chemical peels. In a clinical study, the Dual Exfoliation Peel achieved better results than a combined microdermabrasion/30% glycolic peel in both immediate and prolonged smoothness and radiance.

“The inspiration behind this treatment was the fact that people are no longer equating holistic brands with high-performance results,” says Helga Hefner, Manager of Professional Skin and Spa Education at Aveda. “We wanted to push the boundaries of what we could do at an Aveda spa.”

To that end, Dual Exfoliation features many of the components of the company’s facials that consumers have come to love and expect (for example, hot towels, delicious aromas, and comforting touch), but it also incorporates powerful resurfacing techniques, our high performance Perfecting Plant Peel™, as well as the new Tulasāra™ Concentrates, which are infused with nurturing botanicals to deliver smoother, brighter, more radiant skin. The result? “We’ve married art and science,” says Helga.

The new Tulasāra™ Concentrates are an integral part of the Dual Exfoliation Peel.

The treatment is customized to your needs and your schedule (it’s offered at 60 or 90 minutes) by your esthetician. First, there’s a consultation. “We look closely at the skin and talk about the client’s concerns. Then, we decide which other areas of the body need special attention so that while the peel sits on your skin, we can use the time to massage your sore feet or aching neck,” says Helga.

Next, you’ll choose from an array of aromas that your esthetician can mix into the products throughout the treatment. A double cleansing and removal of all your makeup follows. Last is a step we’ll call TCL (for towels, compress, and lotion)—hot towels are used to clear away residue, then cold compresses are placed on the face, and, finally, lotion.

The treatment continues with a double dry brushing experience using Aveda’s Tulasāra™ Professional Dry Brushes. Your esthetician will work simultaneously on both sides of your face to encourage exfoliation. Then your esthetician will gently press the Skin Refiner, a micro-exfoliant with granulated bamboo, into your skin. It is all swept off the skin with the aforementioned TCL sequence.

With the skin beautifully exfoliated, it’s time for the peel.

“We’re using Outer Peace™ Acne Relief Pads to swipe the skin and clean out the pores,” says Helga. The pads are infused with wintergreen-derived salicylic acid, which is for deep cleaning. Next, the Aveda Professional™ Plant Perfecting Peel™ system is applied with a dry Aveda masque brush. This causes a warm (never too hot!) sensation. It’s left on for ten minutes during which “the magic happens,” says Helga. The mask penetrates while sore muscles are massaged and unknotted. The peel is removed with the hot-towel sequence and followed with the Aveda Professional™ Aquatherapy Formula, which has a wet sand consistency and packs the skin with hydration.

When the grit has been washed off the face, you’re in the home stretch. “We apply the Aveda Professional™ Recovery Serum, dry brush again, then apply the Aveda Professional™ Cooling Masque and cover the skin with pre-moistened compresses. Next, we use two cool gemstone rollers to massage and cool the skin for three minutes,” says Helga. Everything is once again removed with the warm towel sequence after which either the Bright, Calm, or Firm Tulasāra™ Concentrate is applied to the face followed by lotion. Last, the lips are smothered in the Renewing Lip Treatment and Lip Saver.

“We start and finish the treatment with sacred sounds,” says Helga. Tibetan Tingshas ping you back to consciousness. Sounds delightful, doesn’t it?
